Widespread Food Additive Could Increase Fat Absorption

Recent research from the University of California, Irvine suggests that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), commonly found in processed foods and beverages, may contribute to weight gain by altering gut microbiome dynamics. The study investigated how HFCS affects the body’s ability to absorb dietary fats.

Key findings include:

  1. Impact on the Gut: HFCS affects the gut by modifying bacteria, which in turn changes the structure of tiny vessels called lacteals that absorb dietary fat.

  2. Mice Study: Researchers studied mice and found that those lacking the enzyme Ketohexokinase-C (essential for breaking down fructose) gained significantly less weight despite similar caloric intake compared to other mice. They also had better insulin sensitivity.

  3. Gut Microbiome Changes: When fructose isn’t broken down as expected, it travels further in the digestive system, leading to changes in gut bacteria and the associated structures that absorb fat.

  4. Caution on Human Applicability: While the findings are compelling, researchers caution that results in mice may not directly translate to humans. More studies are needed to explore these mechanisms in people.

The study underscores the potential role of fructose, not just as a calorie source, but as a factor reshaping gut health and influencing energy absorption. Further research could help in understanding and addressing obesity and metabolic diseases.
