Obsession Achieved Great Success, But I Recently Learned Another Studio Completely Misplaced the Movie.

Obsession has captivated audiences, turning into a phenomenon in the horror film genre. Produced on a budget of just $700,000, it has surged past $500 million in global box office sales, establishing itself as one of the top success stories in the 2026 movie calendar. The film features Inde Navarrette, recognized for her role as Nikki, who will soon be seen in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film.

The narrative follows a young man whose wish to win his crush leads to unforeseen sinister consequences. Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman expressed his regret over losing the bidding war for this film, highlighting the stakes involved in securing original content in today’s competitive market.

Though there’s a perception that younger audiences are less inclined to go to theaters, Obsession has proven otherwise, tapping into significant cultural themes that resonate widely. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the film was acquired for $15 million, confirming its potential as a blockbuster.

Nikki has become an iconic character, evidenced by Universal Studios adding her as a roaming attraction for Halloween Horror Nights, reflecting the character’s popularity.

Creators Curry Barker and Cooper Tomlinson, already capitalizing on the film’s success with their upcoming project Anything But Ghosts, are expanding the universe of Obsession. This raises intriguing questions about how the film’s success will influence studios’ strategies in identifying and bidding for future projects.
