Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) is offering free Quick Home Energy Check-ups to help customers save energy and money through the EmPOWER Maryland program. This initiative, funded by a charge on energy bills, aims to identify energy-saving opportunities.
For families like Amanda and Michael Bianca, managing energy use is crucial. They signed up for the check-up, where a technician from EZ Green assessed their home’s efficiency. The visit included suggestions for minor improvements such as insulating hot water pipes, switching to LED bulbs, and installing efficient showerheads—all at no cost.
Mark Wilson from EZ Green pointed out that simple changes, like adding weatherstripping to doors, can lead to significant savings (15-20% reduction in energy usage). The Biancas are enthusiastic about implementing these changes and teaching their children about energy conservation.
Additionally, BGE has submitted a proposal to the Maryland Public Service Commission aimed at further cost reductions for customers.
