Russia has announced retaliatory measures against Germany, targeting the German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg and Goethe-Institut centers throughout Russia. The Russian foreign ministry stated that Germany must cease consular activities by September 18, and all staff must leave by that date. Similarly, the Goethe-Institut centers must cease operations, with their staff required to exit by September 13.
These actions follow Germany’s closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. The Russian ministry accused Germany of provoking a new strain in their bilateral relationship, stating that the “entire responsibility for the consequences lies entirely with the German government.” The measures were officially communicated to Germany’s charge d’affaires in Russia.
