Volkswagen is converting its car plant in Osnabrück, Germany, to defense production amid increasing military spending in Europe. The plant has been sold to the State of Lower Saxony and investment firm Aurelius Capital, which will partner with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to manufacture air defense systems for Germany and Europe. This move aims to preserve nearly 1,400 jobs at the site and serves as a model for other Volkswagen factories facing closure.
Volkswagen’s CEO, Oliver Blume, highlighted the agreement as a significant step towards a new industrial future for the plant. This announcement follows the company’s extensive restructuring plan aimed at securing its future, which includes cutting model offerings and approximately 50,000 jobs.
As Germany boosts its defense budget by a third, reaching €109.7 billion, the conversion of vehicle factories to military equipment production could revitalize the manufacturing sector. The deal is pending regulatory approval and final agreements on the new structure.
