Storytellers of Cedar Rapids Launches Third Season
CEDAR RAPIDS — The third season of Storytellers of Cedar Rapids is set to open this week, featuring four speakers sharing true, personal stories on the theme of “Against The Grain.”
This five-part storytelling series, produced by Akwi Nji and co-facilitated by Courtney Ball, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Groundswell Cafe, located at 201 Third Ave. SW. The event will spotlight storytellers Clint Twedt-Ball, Ayla Dawson, Rina Jensen, and Sarah Van Cleve, alongside musical guest Blake Shaw, a double bassist.
“Reaching a third season of new stories is a reminder that there’s no end to the stories we can share as a community,” Nji mentioned in a news release. She emphasized the importance of creating a space where diverse voices can coexist, reflecting each generation’s unique memories and perspectives.
This series is part of nonprofit Matthew 25’s mission to strengthen community ties, featuring featured storytellers, open mic spots, live music, and chances for community connection. “I continue to be amazed by the positive response from our audiences,” Ball added, noting that every show so far has sold out, and attendees leave feeling optimistic about their community.

Orchestra Iowa Launches Barrels & Brass
CEDAR RAPIDS — Orchestra Iowa is rebranding its Beer & Brass series to Barrels & Brass, expanding its beverage offerings this fall. While the music remains focused on classics from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, and beyond, attendees will now have options for wine and hard cider flights in addition to beer.
The series will run from 7 to 9 p.m. on various dates, with the launch event set for Oct. 7 at Opus Concert Cafe, still featuring a beer flight. The following concert on Oct. 8 at Wilson’s Orchard will highlight hard ciders, and the Oct. 9 event at Fireside Winery will offer selections of dry or sweet wine or cider.
“Expanding where the orchestra plays made it logical to also enhance our beverage options,” remarked Orchestra Iowa CEO Eric Marshall.
Tickets for the events are priced at $30, which includes one beverage flight per guest. Attendees must be 21 or older and present valid ID for their flight.
