Increasing numbers of Chinese pet owners opt for traditional Chinese medicine to treat chronic illnesses in animals with herbs, bee venom, and acupuncture.

The trend of pet owners in China increasingly turning to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for their pets is notable, particularly for managing chronic conditions and providing end-of-life care. The hashtag #petTCM, gaining over five million views on social media, signifies a shift in attitudes, as many pet owners share their experiences with TCM.

A specific case highlights this trend: a Beijing pet owner with a seven-year-old dog, Iron Man, faced with severe gastrointestinal issues. After an unsuccessful treatment at a Western veterinary clinic, where Iron Man was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, the owner sought alternative solutions through TCM.

The practitioner utilized traditional assessment methods, including pulse examination and an inquiry into the dog’s overall health and habits, before prescribing a combination of Chinese patent medicine and dietary therapy. This approach represents a growing integration of TCM within veterinary practices for chronic pet health issues.
