Fairgoers at the Nebraska State Fair experienced a global journey without leaving Fonner Park. On Sunday, thirty Fulbright scholars from twenty countries showcased their cultures in an interactive event titled “From Around the World to Nebraska.” Beginning at 10 a.m., the Fonner Park concourse was adorned with flags, games, and traditional items from countries like Mexico, Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, and Japan.
Parviz Jamalov, a member of the UNL Fulbright Association, highlighted the effort the scholars put into their booths, saying they spent considerable time crafting creative displays to reflect their vibrant cultures. Fairgoers explored various booths, learning about unique items and traditions.
For instance, at the Mexico booth, Raúl Puente showcased colorful piñatas and Mexican wrestling masks, while Mohsin Kamal introduced traditional accessories and embroidered clothing representing Pakistan. Zainab Shafiq also displayed homemade bangles, emphasizing their vibrant colors.
At the Lesotho booth, Malemphane Mokoqola captivated visitors with symbolic hats designed by local artisans, detailing their cultural significance.
Jamalov organized the event to foster personal connections, fulfilling his dream of bringing the world to Nebraska’s signature event.
