Libya’s Government of National Unity announced on September 7, 2026, that it has dismantled an organized “sabotage cell” responsible for drone attacks on oil and electricity facilities in Tripoli and Zawiya. An operation led by the Defense Ministry resulted in the arrest of five suspects, including both Libyan and foreign individuals, though their nationalities were not disclosed.
In August, various facilities at the Zawiya oil complex and other critical infrastructure suffered attacks involving explosive-laden drones, leading to damage. There were also attempted attacks on a power station south of Tripoli and other vital sites. The government confirmed that these incidents were part of a coordinated sabotage effort and emphasized that dismantling the cell is just the first step in uncovering the broader network behind the attacks. They are committed to pursuing remaining suspects and those who orchestrated or supported the sabotage efforts.
