Trump’s Energy Chief on Gas Prices Amid Midterms
Energy Secretary Chris Wright hesitated to predict gas prices, stating that they might decrease, but he didn’t want to take a firm stance. He noted that futures markets indicate a drop of over 30 cents per gallon from current prices. During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, he suggested that the end of the summer travel season would lead to decreased demand, impacting prices.
As of now, the average gas price in the U.S. is $4.147 per gallon, a significant increase from earlier in the year, which has prompted Trump to downplay the prices as he navigates potential losses for Republicans in the midterms.
Wright discussed the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian activity has raised concerns about commercial shipping safety. He indicated that while U.S. Navy escorts are present, not all companies are willing to risk transit, given recent attacks on vessels.
Despite Wright’s reassurances about safety for vessels working with the Navy, the strait’s traffic remains below pre-conflict levels, and the energy market’s pressures persist. The U.S. administration is also monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities, with Vice President JD Vance stating that there’s no evidence of a nuclear program resurgence following U.S. strikes earlier this year.
