RICHMOND, Va. — Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi is bringing a listening tour focused on energy costs to Richmond as the State Corporation Commission considers the proposed merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra. This tour aims to foster transparency and gather input from residents on how rising energy bills affect them.
Hashmi has expressed serious concerns regarding the potential impact of the merger. “What are the assurances that our families aren’t going to see continued escalation of electric costs?” she queried. Her top priority is ensuring that the merger does not lead to increased energy bills for Virginians.
Concerns about rising electricity costs have been echoed by Dominion Energy customers. Laura Arnett, a single mother, highlighted the systemic issues that might result in many Virginians facing difficulties in affording basic necessities like rent, electricity, and food. Another customer, Aileen Rivera, voiced the worry that vulnerable families may struggle to pay electric bills, impacting their comfort and safety.
Despite these concerns, the merger received overwhelming support from Dominion Energy shareholders, with 98% voting in favor. A spokesperson for Dominion stated that the merger aims to strengthen their capability to serve customers reliably and affordably over the long term.
Not everyone is against the merger; some believe it is essential for the future growth and stability of energy services in Virginia. The Energy Costs Listening Tour will take place in Richmond on Wednesday.
