Playground Games is taking a unique approach with the upcoming Fable game by ensuring that every NPC is individually designed rather than generated through random traits. This decision aims to craft a more immersive and believable world, where each character has distinct jobs, appearances, and personalities that fit cohesively within the narrative and environment.
Director Ralph Fulton highlighted the importance of this crafting process in a recent interview. Although using a randomizer could have saved a considerable amount of development time, it ultimately led to characters that felt disconnected and unrealistic. For instance, Bowerstone will feature 400 NPCs, all meticulously designed.
The game’s release is set for 2027, and it will notably be the first in the series available on Sony PlayStation consoles, marking a significant shift in Xbox’s exclusivity strategy.
