Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted early Sunday, causing widespread flight cancellations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and disruptions at other domestic airports due to ash drifting across western Indonesia. The eruption, which lasted about 30 seconds at 3:53 AM, impacted nearly 500 flights and around 150,000 passengers, as reported by the AP.
Despite the eruption, no casualties were reported, and no evacuation orders were issued since the nearest settlement is over 10 miles away. However, authorities advised people to stay at least 2 miles from the active crater. Indonesia’s volcanology agency and the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre detected two ash clouds using satellite imagery: one reaching 20,000 feet over Jakarta and West Java, and another rising to 50,000 feet, affecting areas in southern Banten, Lampung, Bengkulu, and parts of the Indian Ocean near Sumatra.
