Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Center Opens in Hamburg
A new Chinese intangible cultural heritage experience center has opened at the Hamburg Yuyuan Garden in Germany, providing a permanent platform for visitors to engage with traditional Chinese culture and craftsmanship. This launch coincides with the 40th anniversary of sister city relations between Shanghai and Hamburg.
Interactive Workshops and Exhibits
Visitors can participate in various interactive workshops, including:
- Tea Art Demonstrations
- Crafting herbal sachets from the renowned Shanghai pharmacy Tonghanchuntang
- Making Pear Syrup Candy, a traditional Shanghai sweet
- Tasting Five-Spice Beans, a local snack
- Calligraphy on lacquer fans
Additionally, exhibits showcase modern products inspired by traditional craftsmanship, featuring:
- Watches from the century-old Shanghai Watch brand
- Eyewear from the Red Star optical brand
- Hand-painted Jing Fans
- Elements from the Yuyuan Lantern Festival, recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage project
The Hamburg Yuyuan Garden
The garden itself, gifted by Shanghai in 2008, highlights Jiangnan architectural styles, including the Mid-Lake Pavilion and Zigzag Bridge, adapted for European visitors with an open layout.
Future Cultural Events
The experience center is set to host regular workshops, exhibitions, and folk performances, establishing itself as a hub for ongoing cultural exchanges between China and Europe. Plans for further cultural events are scheduled for 2027, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Germany.
