The Nevada Gaming Control Board has taken a firm stance against prediction markets, declaring them a form of gambling that is illegal unless properly licensed. Chairman Mike Dreitzer emphasized that these markets are indistinguishable from sports betting, echoing support from a recent 9th Circuit Court ruling.
Despite this opposition, Kalshi, a leading prediction market company, maintains that it operates as a financial exchange and not as a gambling platform. Co-founder Luana Lopes Lara argues for a federal regulatory framework over the varied state jurisdictions, stressing their efforts to prevent underage participation, which Dreitzer highlighted as a significant concern.
Simultaneously, New Jersey’s Attorney General has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to address conflicts regarding the legality of prediction markets in various states, indicating ongoing litigation across the nation. The resolution timeline for the Supreme Court’s involvement remains uncertain.
