Salt Lake City Labor Day Travel Predictions Amid Rising Gas Prices
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Despite a significant increase in gas prices, Labor Day travel is projected to reach record levels.
The current statewide average for a gallon of gas on September 9 is $4.42, compared to $3.31 in 2025, according to AAA. Doug Johnson from AAA attributes the rising prices mainly to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He emphasized that stabilization in global oil markets is necessary for prices to drop again.
While Utah ranks 9th in the nation for the highest gas prices, Johnson notes that geography and infrastructure contribute to these costs. “Utah has refineries, but much gasoline must be imported from out of state,” he explains.
Travel Tips
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises holiday travelers to expect potential delays of up to 60 minutes on highways, especially on US 6 and I-15. UDOT spokesperson John Gleason recommends leaving early to avoid peak congestion.
