Labor Day Travel Concerns Amid Rising Gas Prices
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – The Labor Day weekend is traditionally a busy travel period for many Americans, but rising gas prices are causing some to rethink their plans.
Dennie Criswell, a St. Louis resident, expressed his disappointment: “It would be nice if the gas prices were lower. Then you’d be able to balance your budget and say hey let’s go to Kansas City or Chicago or Memphis.” He notes that even short trips are affected by high fuel costs and rising food prices.
According to AAA, gas prices this Labor Day are expected to hit record highs, surpassing the previous peak in 2012. Criswell mentioned that his budget does not allow for a getaway due to both gas and everyday expenses climbing. “Your paycheck isn’t going up as much as gas and food,” he said, emphasizing the challenge of making financial choices.
Currently, gas prices are nearly $1 more per gallon than last year, with the national average at $4.14. Back in 2025, that average was significantly lower at $3.19. While Missouri has a silver lining with prices averaging $3.80—32 cents below the national average—it’s still 95 cents higher than last Labor Day.
Cristin Norman also reflects on the impact of fuel costs, as her son learns the realities of driving: “It was only $31 to fill up, and I’m like no, I only had half a tank left, so it’s about 60-something to fill up and this is a small car.”
With potential rain dampening holiday plans, Criswell noted, “It’s putting a kibosh on some of my activities like golf and barbecuing.” Like many, he finds himself staying indoors this Labor Day.
