MDOT and MHP Encourage Safety for Football Season Travel and Labor Day Weekend

MDOT and MHP Promote Safe Travel for Labor Day Weekend and Football Season

JACKSON, Miss. — As the Labor Day holiday coincides with the start of the college football season, both events are expected to significantly increase traffic. To ensure safety for those traveling to games or enjoying a final summer getaway, the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) are urging drivers to exercise caution.

Key Points:

  • MHP Safety Enforcement: The MHP will launch its holiday safety enforcement period starting Friday and will continue through Labor Day. Troopers will be actively monitoring for impaired driving, distracted driving, and speeding, with safety checkpoints set up across the state.
  • Past Statistics: Last year, MHP recorded nearly 160 crashes during the Labor Day enforcement period, including three fatal incidents. Over 600 citations were issued, with around 90 arrests for driving under the influence.
  • MDOT’s Road to Game Day Initiative: MDOT’s new initiative aims to provide strategies for safe travel during the football season. The free MDOT Traffic App allows drivers to check live traffic conditions, view traffic cameras, and receive alerts for collisions or construction delays.
  • Safety Tips: MDOT emphasizes the importance of following traffic laws, slowing down in work zones, and always wearing seat belts.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, travelers can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience during the holiday weekend and throughout the football season.
