This Labor Day weekend, Florida travelers are facing increased costs compared to last year. According to the AAA Auto Club Group of Florida, travel demand is high across various modes—planes, cars, and cruise ships—as many look to enjoy a final summer getaway.
Mark Jenkins, a spokesperson for AAA, noted that families are prioritizing vacations, whether they be cruises, national park adventures, or international trips. Orlando ranks as the second most popular domestic destination for Labor Day, followed by Seattle and Boston.
However, rising fuel prices are impacting travel budgets. Domestic airfare has risen by about 2% to an average of $750 round-trip, with popular destinations seeing an average fare of $790—around 20% higher. Gas prices have also surged, with averages in Florida significantly exceeding last year’s $3.19 per gallon.
Lodging costs are up as well, with domestic hotel booking prices climbing by 9%, and international accommodations rising by 12%. In contrast, international airfare has decreased by about 4% compared to last year, and there’s a slight easing in cruise costs, with bookings averaging $2,700, down 4% from the previous year.
Heavy road traffic is expected on Friday as holiday travelers mix with regular commuters.
