COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Labor Day travel kicked off Thursday, with AAA anticipating assistance for over 400,000 stranded drivers across the nation this weekend. Travelers are advised to expect more vehicles on the road, increased travel costs, and longer TSA lines at airports.
AAA Recommends Early Departure
AAA spokesperson Montrae Waiters emphasized that leaving early can significantly reduce travel stress. “When it comes to traveling, leave early. The sooner you hit the road, the better,” she stated. She also recommended a vehicle maintenance check before departure, noting that last year, AAA helped over 400,000 drivers, primarily due to dead batteries, flat tires, and towing needs. “A quick vehicle check can prevent a breakdown from ruining your holiday weekend,” she added.
Local Residents Share Travel Plans
Columbus resident Michael King plans to celebrate his birthday this weekend in Florida. “We’re heading to Panama City Beach for some sunshine and relaxation,” he shared.
Another resident, Jose Torres, is heading to Atlanta for a concert. “With the extra day off, I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend,” he mentioned, including plans for a pool party upon his return.
According to Waiters, preparation is essential for a successful Labor Day weekend. “The biggest takeaway is to plan ahead, expect heavier traffic, budget for potentially higher travel costs, and ensure your vehicle is ready to hit the road. A little preparation can make your Labor Day getaway safer and less stressful,” she advised.
