Michael Lombardi has resigned as the general manager of the University of North Carolina’s football program, effective September 3, 2026. His departure follows a period of administrative leave, initiated on July 27, due to a human resources complaint from a former employee. The university is currently conducting an investigation into the matter, assisted by an external firm, and details regarding the investigation remain undisclosed.
Lombardi, who joined the program in December 2024 and earned a salary of $1.5 million, has hired attorney Tom Mars and is cooperating with the investigation. His son, Matt Lombardi, remains on staff as the quarterbacks coach. The Tar Heels are set to resume play against East Tennessee State on September 12 after a bye following their previous victory over TCU.
