Following a history of phasing out nuclear power after incidents like the Three Mile Island meltdown, the nation is collaborating with firms like GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T to deploy next-gen BWRX-300 reactors.
Currently, Sweden generates about 30% of its electricity from conventional nuclear, with plans for a four-unit SMR project in Nyköping and Valdemarsvik that will add approximately 1.2 GW of capacity, aiming for completion in the 2030s. This initiative reflects a broader trend of countries reevaluating their nuclear policies amid concerns over aging infrastructure and baseload power needs.
Studsvik’s CEO Karl Thedéen emphasized the importance of long-term partnerships to realize these energy ambitions, positioning the first SMR units as a pioneering step towards a broader industry. Collaborative efforts with GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T are intended to leverage Sweden’s nuclear expertise for efficient deployment.
