The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is emphasizing safety for Alabamians during the Labor Day weekend as the combination of summer travel and football season leads to increased traffic.
ALEA Troopers and Special Agents will be more visible on highways and waterways, urging drivers and boaters to:
– Avoid impaired driving
– Wear seat belts and life jackets
– Keep phones away while driving
– Slow down
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor stressed the importance of safety, saying, “Wherever your plans take you, make sure getting home safely is part of them.” The agency anticipates heavier traffic around college campuses and recreation areas, advising travelers to plan for potential delays.
Last year’s Labor Day weekend saw 371 traffic crashes in Alabama, resulting in 147 injuries and six fatalities. Additionally, there were 33 DUI arrests and thousands of citations for speeding and seat belt violations.
Marine Patrol Troopers also reported several boating incidents and urges travelers to designate sober drivers and use proper safety equipment to ensure everyone’s safe arrival.
