Johns opened his own salon on Fifth Avenue in 1996 and retired in 2019 to explore art, including painting and glasswork. His memoir, “Dye: A Memoir of Art, Music, Faith, Family, and Hair Color,” co-written with Marianne Dougherty, details his life journey through adversity and creativity.
