Realta’s Fusion Energy Initiatives
Timeline for Commercialization:
- Kieran Furlong, CEO of Realta, anticipates that the company will commercialize its fusion technology by the early 2030s. Plans for a fusion power plant in Wisconsin are set for the mid-2030s, although details around connecting it to the grid are still uncertain.
Partnership with MGE:
- MGE’s Role: MGE has made a notable equity investment in Realta and is now a shareholder. It will also support engineering and technical services for Realta’s research and development center, called Realta Forge, located at the former Oscar Meyer site in Madison.
- Government Support: The Wisconsin and Madison governments have pledged up to $55 million for the development of the headquarters and research facility.

- Realta is developing a fusion energy system utilizing a tandem axisymmetric magnetic mirror. This technology, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin–Madison, involves experiments with the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM), optimizing plasma performance through advanced heating techniques.
- The company is one of eight selected for the Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, focused on achieving significant scientific energy gains through innovative modeling.
