Gas Prices Soar Before Labor Day Weekend
As the Labor Day weekend approaches, many drivers are feeling the pinch at the pump. In Massachusetts, the average gas price has reached $4.17 per gallon—over a dollar more than last year’s $3.07.
Drivers like Grace Becchinelli and Anthony Adams voiced their frustrations. “What are you gonna do? Gotta get gas,” Becchinelli said, while Adams noted that filling up now costs significantly more: “It used to cost like $50-$60, but now it’s definitely a lot more.”
Nationwide, gas prices average $4.14, up from $3.19 last year, marking the highest recorded prices for this time of year. AAA highlighted the financial burden on daily commuters, with individuals like Morgan Wise expressing concern over the costs. “Gas alone is hundreds of dollars a month,” Wise said, reflecting on her daily drive from Boston to Worcester.
Expect heavy traffic this weekend, with the worst travel times predicted for Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m., leading to early openings of the HOV lane by MassDOT. Friday’s travel peak will be from noon to 8 p.m., while Saturday will see heavy traffic between 1 and 5 p.m.
The rising fuel prices are also impacting air travel, with domestic flight costs increasing by 2% from last year. Passengers are noticing these hikes, as Wise commented on flight prices from Boston to Dallas jumping from about $300 to $400 or $500. Additionally, hotel rates have surged by 9%, adding to the overall travel costs.
With these escalating expenses, many are left wondering how to manage their budgets during this busy travel season.
