‘Step Up’ Actress Jenna Dewan Strongly Supports ‘DWTS’ Casting Despite Her Dance Experience

Jenna Dewan is addressing criticisms regarding her casting on “Dancing With the Stars” for Season 35. Despite her extensive dance background—having been a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and starring alongside Channing Tatum in “Step Up”—Dewan emphasized that she doesn’t know ballroom dancing. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she explained the distinction between her previous dance training and the new skills required for ballroom, highlighting the need to “unlearn” certain habits.

At 45, Dewan expressed her nerves about competing, stating that her dance experience adds a layer of pressure. Her pro partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, backed her up, pointing out that the show is more than just about dance and involves revealing personal journeys. Other contestants this season include Harry Shum Jr., Julia Stiles, and Ciara Miller. Shum Jr. also defended his own casting, noting the vast diversity of dance styles.
