South Africa: Surge of $1.2 Billion in Renewable Energy Investment

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved 124 new renewable energy projects, attracting R20.18 billion (US$1.2 billion) for infrastructure development. Out of these, 61 projects will connect to Eskom’s transmission grid, while 63 will integrate with municipal networks to bolster urban resilience against grid failures.

Approved in Q1 of the 2026/27 financial year, these projects represent 804 megawatts (MW) of new capacity, including significant contributions from large-scale wind farms and solar facilities. Two major wind projects account for 568 MW, while the remaining 236 MW is distributed among 122 solar photovoltaic (PV) projects.

Industrial Info Resources is currently monitoring 637 wind and solar projects in South Africa, totaling an estimated US$130 billion in investment value.
