Seoul Introduces Eco-Friendly Water Fountains
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has launched seven designs of “Seoul-style water fountains” aimed at promoting the use of personal tumblers and reducing single-use plastics. These fountains are equipped with features that accommodate children, wheelchair users, and pet owners.
Features and Design
- Water Source: The fountains provide Arisu, the city’s tap water.
- User-Friendly Design: Developed through citizen workshops, the designs prioritize universal accessibility by eliminating floor-step barriers and including open spaces for easy access.
- Safety Features: They boast measures such as burn protection from hot water and tactile buttons that require minimal pressure to operate.
Types of Fountains
- Outdoor Types: Include variants for general tumbler refills, an expanded version, and a design specifically for pets.
- Indoor Types: Feature fountains catered to children and a wall-mounted version.
- Efficiency: A dedicated nozzle supports tumblers for quicker refills, while an internal drainage system prevents spills.
Expansion Plans
The first fountain has been installed in the lobby of Seoul City Hall, with plans for wider deployment in parks, schools, and offices. The city will release design guidelines soon and support both public and private sectors interested in adopting these standardized models.
Community Engagement Event
To celebrate “Resource Circulation Day” on September 6, a “Goodbye Plastic Seoul” event will be held at City Hall’s lobby. Participants bringing their tumblers for refills can receive branded merchandise, including tumblers and keyrings.
Choi In-kyu, Seoul’s Design Policy Bureau Director, expressed hope that these fountains will become vital civic infrastructure, fostering tumbler usage and ensuring accessible drinking water for all citizens.
