US Energy Companies Lead Multi-Billion Dollar Deals in Venezuela

Venezuela recently entered into significant energy deals with U.S. companies, totaling billions, as part of an agreement to grant the U.S. majority control over its vast oil reserves. These multi-billion-dollar agreements were supervised by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez.

The deals involve major players like Chevron, GE Vernova, and Italy’s ENI, which will enhance operations in Venezuela’s oil sector. Critics have raised concerns regarding Venezuela’s sovereignty, suggesting that this move may be coercive, with claims that Trump’s administration is effectively holding the country for ransom following the ousting of former President Nicolás Maduro.

Wright defended the agreements, insisting the U.S. was not stealing Venezuelan oil but aimed to develop idle resources for the benefit of the Venezuelan populace. Rodriguez claimed that these partnerships are essential for securing investment that would lead to job creation and improved public services.

The contracts would enable Chevron to significantly ramp up production, while ENI has secured exclusive rights to explore a key oil field. The agreements mark a departure from the nationalization trends initiated two decades ago under Hugo Chavez and have sparked debate about the political implications and the ongoing lack of democratic elections in Venezuela.
