Bay County Introduces Microchip Scanners for Lost Pets
PANAMA CITY, Fla. – Losing a pet can be distressing for both the animals and their owners. To mitigate separation anxiety and facilitate the reunification process, Bay County is rolling out pet microchip scanners throughout the county.
The first scanner is located outside the Bay County Fire Rescue station on Thomas Drive, with additional scanners planned for fire stations on the west end, Southport, Hiland Park, and Sand Hills.
When a lost pet’s microchip is scanned, individuals can contact the microchip company. According to Bay County Commissioner Clair Pease, if the chip isn’t registered, they can trace it back to the veterinarian or animal shelter that implanted it, aiding in locating the owner.
The initiative aims to alleviate the strain on animal control caused by the influx of stray animals. “Reducing the number of animals that come to the shelter eases their stress, benefits pet owners, and allows animal control to allocate resources and kennel space for animals in greater need,” stated Serina Junger, manager of Bay County Animal Control.
Additionally, Bay County Animal Control offers microchipping services for just $15.
