Mexico has extended the deadline for energy storage developers to register for its first call for proposals. The new deadline is now October 30, up from September 2. This initiative by the energy ministry (Sener) seeks to attract investment for 935MW of storage capacity to address the aging grid and rising electricity demand.
While the registration date for storage projects was extended, the deadline for renewable energy projects remains unchanged. Selected projects will receive expedited permits and contracts, with a focus on those that can start operations by 2030.
Energy Minister Luz Elena González Escobar indicated that the extension aims to enhance participation, improve technical assessments, reduce costs for private entities, and streamline administrative processes. This marks the third adjustment to the project tender initially issued on May 15.
Previously, in June, CFE concluded its first mixed investment proposal call, selecting around three dozen solar and wind projects totaling approximately 8GW, which included energy storage equivalent to about 30% of their generation capacity.
