Showa American Story: A Wild Ride at Gamescom 2026
At Gamescom, Showa American Story made a splash with a vibrant booth and an electrifying trailer, perfectly capturing its eccentric vibe—described by some as ‘batshit crazy’, yet utterly incredible.
After spending 30 minutes experiencing the game behind closed doors, it became crystal clear that Showa American Story is poised to turn heads.
I Have No Idea What’s Happening
From the moment I sat down, I knew I was entering a chaotic world. My character—scantily clad—was joined by a wheelchair-bound companion as we navigated a deeply twisted version of America, taking on face-painted gang members with unrelenting vigor.
The gameplay was a whirlwind of bizarre scenarios. I fought a gang called The Warriors (what?), wielding a U.S. flag as a weapon (really?), while downing energy drinks for combat boosts (okay?). The absurdity continued as I rescued characters from comical predicaments, like a guy who feared so much he wet himself, and another who hilariously covered his modesty with handheld fans.
Set in a post-apocalyptic alternate history of the U.S., players control Chigusa Choko—a resurrected heroine. In this unlikely landscape, expect encounters with:
- Hopscotch minigames
- Jesus-like masked bosses
- Neon-lit streets filled with Japan-inspired architecture
- Customizable bicycles
- Busty racing car arcade games
- A nostalgic soundtrack
- Main character’s comically exaggerated animations
Chigusa Choko, the game’s star, offers players the ability to upgrade and customize an RV, engaging in a plethora of minigames and side activities that ensure excitement never wanes.
Combat is straightforward yet visually striking, employing a mix of melee weapons, firearms, and inventive items that only a game like this could pull off. The absurdity is embraced wholeheartedly, crafting an experience that leaves players yearning for more.
Showa American Story is set to release later this year. For early birds, it’s already available for wishlisting on Steam.
