I listened to “God Save Birmingham,” and the zombie apocalypse still outshines a Saturday shopping trip at the Bullring.

Discovering Birmingham’s Medieval Zombie Survival Game: A Unique Take on History

As a Birmingham native, stumbling upon a medieval zombie survival game set in my hometown piqued my interest. Eager to explore whether the game authentically depicts Birmingham, I attended its demo at Gamescom.

Surviving 14th Century Birmingham

Developed in Unreal Engine 5, God Save Birmingham embraces hardcore survival mechanics reminiscent of Project Zomboid. My experience was a challenge; fumbling with a mouse and keyboard, I struggled with basic controls, but the excitement grew as I learned about managing stats, hunger, and health in the midst of chaotic undead encounters.

Combat mechanics enable players to strategize by targeting enemy body parts and using environmental items as shields. However, caution is needed, as weapons degrade quickly, and nightfall brings heightened dangers.

Historical Accuracy Meets Creative Liberty

Curious about the choice of Birmingham, the developers explained that they sought a location with a rich medieval history. They are dedicated to historical authenticity, meticulously researching the city’s architecture and layout using resources from the Birmingham Museum.

In-game landmarks like the Bull Ring and St. Martin’s Church are modeled after historical records, offering players a chance to navigate a creatively interpreted yet faithful version of Birmingham’s past.

Engaging with the Game’s Development

The developers emphasized their intention to deliver an engaging survival experience while remaining committed to historical detail. They also plan to incorporate a co-op mode, enhancing collaborative gameplay.

God Save Birmingham is set for early access on Steam in 2027, with hopes for console releases later. While currently text-based, the developers acknowledged the absence of a Brummie accent—something I jokingly volunteered to help with!

As I look forward to a more extensive gameplay experience—and perhaps roleplaying as a local zombie—I remain excited to explore my city as it transforms into a post-apocalyptic battleground.
