60,000 Nutritional Supplements Recalled Across 20 States and Puerto Rico

Collagen peptides have become a popular option for those seeking healthier, more supple skin. Not only do they promise to enhance your skin’s appearance from within, but they also purportedly support stronger bones, muscles, and cartilage.

With the lack of regulation on supplements by federal authorities, choosing the right collagen can be challenging. Consequently, many consumers look to youthful influencers for guidance on suitable products.

Recently, however, a recall affecting 59,701 canisters of a well-known collagen peptide was announced. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that some products may contain “pieces of one blue broken lid.” This recall involves Vital Proteins, a brand associated with celebrity endorsements, including Jennifer Aniston.

Vital Proteins products can be found online and at various retailers such as Target, Costco, Walgreens, CVS, The Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, and GNC. The affected collagen peptides were packaged in 24-ounce plastic canisters bearing the UPC code 857273008666.

The compromised products were distributed across 20 states and Puerto Rico, which include: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

Although the recall was initiated in April 2023 and has since concluded, the products impacted carry a “best by” date of January 9, 2028. This indicates that some customers might still have these items at home without knowledge of the recall.

According to the Vital Proteins website, the brand is transitioning to new paperboard canisters in response to the incident. The company assures customers that the same quality collagen will be available, now with 90% less plastic. They emphasize that this change is not directly related to the recall.

The FDA has classified this incident as a Class II recall, indicating that while there may be temporary or reversible health consequences, the risk of serious adverse effects is remote.

If you suspect you have purchased an affected product, it is advised not to consume it. You may contact Vital Proteins via phone or email for assistance.
