We left the UK with our children and retired in our 30s to explore the globe on a budget of £60 a day.

Ryan and Jess: A Family on the Move

Ryan and Jess Blackley, a couple who left the UK to travel the world with their two children, are redefining the concept of family life and education. At 33 and 32, they began a journey that led them to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where they share adventures with their kids, Noah and Bodhi.

A New Beginning

Having previously traveled together, Ryan and Jess decided their family’s future would “lie outside the UK.” To fund their travels, they rent out multiple properties they own, allowing them to live on an average of £60 a day—significantly less than their previous monthly expenses of £2,200 in the UK.

Their plan shifted from a move to Portugal to a warmer winter in Asia, prompting their relocation to Thailand. They feel they are thriving in this new lifestyle while embracing the concept of world-schooling their children.

Reflections on Life in the UK

Ryan expressed concerns about the UK’s socio-economic environment, citing issues like knife crime and an outdated school system. He stated, “The cost of living is insane,” and emphasized the importance of teaching their kids skills not typically emphasized in traditional education.

Jess shared her dissatisfaction with the “monotony” of school routines, noticing that her son’s reports often contained negativity rather than uplifting experiences.

Their Journey So Far

The Blackleys have been traveling since February 2026. With minimal possessions—just two suitcases and a backpack each—they have explored various parts of Thailand and are gradually making plans to see Malaysia and Singapore. The couple has adopted a lifestyle that values freedom and adaptability, rarely budgeting but keeping track of expenses to ensure they maintain their Lifestyle.
