A Booming Industry
The global pet travel services market is currently valued at approximately $2.8 billion USD and is projected to reach $4 billion. This growth is largely attributed to rising pet adoptions and a willingness among people to travel with their pets.
From dog-friendly hotels like a boutique offering with a ‘Pawsh Spa’ in Los Cabos, Mexico, to a whimsical five-acre ranch for dogs in California, travel options are expanding. Unique pet-focused airlines such as BarkAir in the U.S. and Skye Pets in Australia are also emerging.
Who is Traveling with Pets?
A recent report from Bloomberg reveals that millennials, especially those in double-income households with pets (known as DINKWADs), are driving this trend. They seek luxury experiences they can share with their dogs.
Navigating Travel with Pets
Despite the growing desire to travel with pets, many pet owners still have questions. A 2025 survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) found:
- 41% were unsure about their pet’s eligibility.
- 36% had questions regarding airline policies for pets.
- 34% were uncertain about the overall travel process.
To address these concerns, the IATA recently released new operational guidelines to assist airlines in managing in-cabin pet travel, emphasizing safety and animal welfare.
