Free Public Transport for Care-Experienced Young People in the North East
Care-experienced young people in the North East will continue to enjoy free, unlimited public transport thanks to the extension of the Care Experienced Travel Scheme, confirmed by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.
What is the Care Experienced Travel Scheme?
Launched in 2023, this initiative provides young adults aged 18 to 25 who have left local authority care with a free Pop smartcard. This allows them unlimited travel on buses, Metro services, and the Shields Ferry throughout the region. The scheme has already facilitated over 122,000 journeys, making it easier for care leavers to access education, employment, training, and essential services.
Mayor’s Commitment
Mayor McGuinness emphasized the scheme’s importance, saying, “The cost of living is hitting young people hard, especially those leaving care, who are far more likely to be managing on their own. By making travel completely free, we’re alleviating one of their biggest everyday worries.”
This initiative aligns with the region’s Child Poverty Action Plan, providing practical assistance to those in need.
Benefits Beyond Financial Relief
The travel scheme aims not only to reduce costs but also to enhance social mobility, support mental well-being, and ensure care-experienced young people can actively participate in community and economic life.
Callum, a beneficiary of the scheme, noted its personal impact: “Having a Pop card has been the most beneficial thing I own right now. It saves me money and motivates me to get out without worrying about transport costs, which has significantly improved my mental health.”
A Broader Approach to Accessibility
This programme builds on existing measures by the Mayor, such as capping public transport fares at £1 for under-22s and seasonal initiatives like Kids Go Free. Together, these efforts contribute to a more accessible and affordable public transport network across the North East.
