Major Investment in Middletown Steel Plant

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — United States Vice President JD Vance recently led an event in his hometown to announce a substantial $1 billion investment in Cleveland-Cliffs’ Middletown Works steel plant. This initiative is supported by a $500 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Key Details:

  • Investment Timeline: The funds are expected to be deployed over four years, with work commencing in the coming weeks.
  • Project Components: A central aspect of the investment involves creating an advanced cogeneration facility. This facility will capture and utilize blast furnace gas to generate electricity and steam for the plant, thus enhancing energy efficiency and reducing reliance on external electricity sources.
  • Economic Impact: The project is expected to employ over 1,500 workers at peak construction, benefiting the local economy and construction unions.

Vice President Vance reflected on his personal connection to the plant, sharing that his grandfather worked there decades ago. He emphasized the significance of this investment for the community and highlighted the steel industry’s role in regional growth.

Middletown City Manager Ashley Combs noted the historical importance of the plant, which has been operational for 125 years, stating that this investment solidifies Cleveland-Cliffs’ commitment to the community. Mayor Elizabeth Slamka echoed the sentiment, praising the importance of the steel industry to the region.

During his remarks, Vance also pointed to the job restoration efforts of the previous administration and criticized opposing policies while supporting local candidates.
