Alaska Marine Highway System Receives $410 Million Investment

ANCHORAGE, AK – U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, Congressman Nick Begich, and Governor Mike Dunleavy (all R-Alaska) announced that Alaska will receive over $410 million to enhance the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), focusing on rural Southeast Alaska.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities secured funding through six successful applications, which include:
- $161.2 million for ferry operations support across 20+ communities, covering vessel operations, crew, fuel, and maintenance.
- $153.4 million for the design and construction of a replacement for the M/V LeConte to improve reliability and efficiency.
- $37.6 million for the Cascade Point Ferry Terminal, reducing the Juneau-Haines-Skagway sailing distance and operating costs.
- $33.4 million for Kake Ferry Terminal modernization to accommodate more vessels.
- $20.6 million for expanding Saxman Seaport to improve freight movements.
- $4 million for modernizing customer service operations, including reservation systems.
Senator Lisa Murkowski stated, “This federal investment is a major victory for Alaska… Our waterways connect us to our neighbors. With this funding, we can ensure AMHS remains a reliable service.”
Senator Dan Sullivan emphasized the necessity of marine transportation for Alaska’s remote communities and hailed the investment as historic.
Congressman Nick Begich remarked, “Reliable ferry service is fundamental to the economic vitality… These projects represent meaningful investments in the long-term health of the Marine Highway system.”
Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed gratitude toward the Department of Transportation for their efforts in securing this vital funding, while U.S. Transportation Under Secretary Ryan McCormack highlighted the importance of ferries for Alaskans’ daily needs.
