Bill Ackman Introduces an Innovative Investment Approach for Pre-IPO Firms

Bill Ackman has recently announced plans for a new closed-end investment fund, Pershing Square Ventures, Ltd., following the launch of Pershing Square USA earlier this year. This new fund will focus on investing in late-stage private companies, as Ackman believes his team is adept at navigating this market. Pershing Square has already made some private investments outside its funds, which Ackman suggests could enhance the performance of existing funds.

Key advantages of Pershing Square Ventures include its structure as a closed-end fund, allowing it to retain investments post-IPO, and the expectation of lower fees compared to existing venture funds, which often have high management and performance fees. Ackman believes that the new fund will cater to unmet demand in the venture space, especially since many current funds are oversubscribed.

To ensure transparency and confidence, Ackman will seed the fund with investments from Pershing Square’s balance sheet and his family office, allowing potential investors to see the assets backing the fund. The launch is anticipated to occur before the year’s end, with further details on fees and initial investments to follow. Ackman asserts that this venture will not only contribute to the fund’s success but could also enhance the returns of Pershing Square’s main investment strategies in publicly traded companies.
