Coffee and Body Composition: New Insights from Finnish Research

Grab another cup of coffee! While some people appreciate a bit of extra padding, excess body fat can negatively impact health by heightening the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. However, a leaner physique might just be one drink away, as revealed by research from Finland.

According to a study conducted at the University of Oulu, those who regularly consume coffee tend to have a leaner body composition, featuring less body fat and more muscle mass compared to those who skip their morning brew. The study involved over 2,200 participants who completed questionnaires about their health, diet, physical activity, and daily coffee intake, ranging from none to five or more cups per day.

Researchers measured body fat and muscle mass after participants fasted overnight and avoided coffee. Blood samples were collected to analyze how the body handled sugar.

The findings indicated that greater coffee consumption correlated with lower total body fat and increased skeletal muscle mass. Notably, participants who drank more coffee also exhibited lower levels of visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs and is associated with health issues like cardiovascular disease.

While the study established a relationship between coffee intake and body composition, it did not confirm a direct cause-and-effect scenario. Interestingly, increased coffee consumption was associated with lower levels of specific branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are crucial for protein building. High levels of these amino acids can be linked to insulin resistance and a higher risk of diabetes.

It’s important to note, however, that the study also found sometimes unfavorable health outcomes associated with higher coffee intake, especially among men, who displayed higher levels of certain cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein particles.

Gender Differences in Response to Coffee

The study revealed differential responses to coffee between men and women regarding glucose control; men generally had lower insulin levels, while women showed fewer significant associations between coffee intake and glucose responses.

Lead study author Luca Verroest highlighted the need for further exploration into how coffee consumption affects metabolism and hormonal responses, noting a “distinct hormonal signature” related to coffee that could vary significantly between genders.

So, as you savor your next cup of coffee, remember it may do more than just wake you up—it might also be contributing to a healthier body composition!
