Bengaluru is set to see a new initiative aimed at promoting healthier eating at weddings and large social events. The state’s Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to require caterers to display calorie counts for food items at events with more than 50 attendees. This move is aimed at addressing overeating, which can happen when attendees are presented with numerous lavish dishes—potentially leading to consumption of up to 5,000 calories in a single meal.
FDA Commissioner K. Srinivas emphasized that increased awareness of caloric intake could help attendees make more mindful choices about what and how much they eat, potentially reducing risks of health issues like high blood pressure and diabetes. In addition to calorie labeling, the FDA is considering inspections of cloud kitchens and home chefs to ensure food safety and quality.
