The historic Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, is up for sale again after 250 years, raising hopes for new investment. Previously sold in 2008, it is now listed alongside the nearby Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons, covering 256 acres. Corin Thoday from Targetfollow, the current owners, believes selling both properties together will attract more interest, with current leases remaining intact.
Local businesses, such as Eggs Eleven cafe, vocalized support for new ownership, hoping for revitalization of the landmark. Gurky Koca, the cafe’s owner, emphasized the need for investment to enhance the area’s appeal, while Nick Wackett, another tenant, requested improvements without high rent increases affecting independent traders.
Concerns were raised about the maintenance of the historic buildings, and it was noted by Sarah Wood from Trevor Mottram that specialized knowledge is needed for upkeep. The Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is aware of the situation, expecting Targetfollow to undertake repairs soon.
The Pantiles spans over 40,000 sq ft and includes 25 retail units, with potential for refurbishing 28 flats. Community group Friends of the Commons hopes the new owners will regard the commons’ importance and express interest in purchasing them for public access in the future.
