NRL officials have arrived in England to engage with clubs as a potential landmark agreement with Super League approaches completion. Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves have confirmed their plans for an exciting weekend event in Dublin in 2027.
Discussions between the two leagues have been ongoing throughout the year, focusing on a significant NRL investment in Super League aimed at improving its long-term viability. This collaboration follows the NRL’s completion of a substantial A$5.3 billion broadcasting deal. Super League is also nearing the finalization of its broadcasting strategy, expected to feature games on Sky Sports alongside other platforms.
The NRL has prioritized the Super League investment, with multiple clubs reporting interest from Australian officials. Super League’s top executive, Rhodri Jones, expressed optimism about reaching a deal soon, noting that now that the NRL has completed its TV negotiations, discussions can advance more swiftly.
Wigan and Warrington, both strong proponents of Australian investment, are enthusiastic about this partnership. Wigan’s CEO, Kris Radlinski, reaffirmed their full support and anticipation for a transformative period for the sport as broadcasting approaches are clarified. The clubs are aiming for a capacity crowd of 20,000 for the Dublin match, leveraging connections with figures like Ireland’s rugby coach, Andy Farrell, to enhance event promotion. Additionally, Hull FC is exploring the possibility of relocating a home game to the same venue, creating a weekend festival for Super League.
