Adapting to Change: Troymill’s Commitment to Growth and Investment

Troymill Wood Products: Adapting Through Generations

When Brian Schaefer returned to his family’s business, Troymill Wood Products, in 2004, he quickly recognized the need to adapt strategies that worked for previous generations. His grandfather’s and father’s business models sufficed for their times, but Schaefer realized that a rapidly changing industry demanded new approaches.

Growth and Innovation

Troymill, based in Middlefield, Ohio, now operates three manufacturing facilities and produces over 50,000 pallets weekly for various sectors, including steel, consumer products, automotive, aerospace, and defense. Schaefer noted, “We’ve grown to a size that none of us thought was possible,” emphasizing their continued expansion through acquisitions, equipment upgrades, and, notably, artificial intelligence (AI).

A Business Built on Flexibility

Troymill’s success stems from its diverse product offerings, with pallets accounting for only 60% of its business. The company also manufactures industrial lumber, dunnage, custom crates, and specialty wood components. This diversity has permitted Troymill to remain flexible and responsive to customer demands, unlike competitors who rigidly focus on standard products.

Investing in Internal Capabilities

Troymill has consistently reinvested in its operations, especially during the demand surge seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing vulnerabilities, Schaefer allocated funds for improvements in heat treatment, logistics, and machinery, including a new SII dry kiln that doubled their capacity.

Automation and AI Integration

Looking into the future, Schaefer is enthusiastic about integrating AI technologies to simplify routine tasks and improve accessibility to accumulated knowledge within the company. This initiative aims to enhance productivity and allow employees to focus on more critical tasks.

Pride in Supporting Defense

Troymill has also ventured into complex bids for military contracts. Notable projects include developing crates for the U.S. Navy, demonstrating how the company balances commercial objectives with a sense of duty and pride in contributing to national defense.

In conclusion, Troymill Wood Products thrives through constant adaptation, innovative investments, and a commitment to diverse capabilities, all while fostering a culture of flexibility and growth across generations.
