Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has scrapped his controversial $20 billion venture to manage the commercial rights to FIFA events, including the World Cup. Infantino acknowledged that the initiative fostered divisions among stakeholders, which ultimately contradicted its intended purpose. His re-election for a fourth term in March is now uncertain.
He expressed a commitment to uniting all interested parties in the soccer community. The decision follows threats from European countries, represented by UEFA, to boycott FIFA events if the plan proceeded. Opposition also arose from North America’s Concacaf and Asia’s Asian Football Confederation.
Internally, resistance was notable, with senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigning over the proposal, calling it detrimental to soccer’s future. Additionally, FIFA’s COO Kevin Lamour criticized the project as a personal endeavor, urging soccer’s leaders to reflect critically on the situation. Lamour emphasized his commitment to loyalty and values, even if it jeopardizes his job.
