Unhealthy Foods: Is It Time to Prohibit Bulk Purchase Deals?

The proposals aimed at promoting healthier eating have raised concerns about their potential negative impact on low-income families. Dr. Ciara Fitzpatrick, a law lecturer and anti-poverty campaigner, emphasized the importance of addressing the cost of living crisis, noting that many low-income families struggle to afford healthier food options. She argued that merely changing food placement or pricing in supermarkets will not address the underlying issues affecting these families.

Fitzpatrick called for a broader discussion about increasing the availability of local produce to enhance access for low-income households, asserting that without this, efforts to reduce rising obesity rates will be ineffective.

In contrast, Professor Susan Jebb, chair of the Food Standards Agency (FSA), stated that the proposals are intended to encourage healthier eating. She highlighted the common experience of overspending on unhealthy foods during shopping trips, which can lead to adverse health outcomes.

Jebb also mentioned that some businesses in England have attempted to circumvent restrictions, and she expressed a desire to ensure that similar policies in Northern Ireland are effectively implemented. The Department of Health (DoH) and the FSA are actively seeking input from various stakeholders, including retailers, food businesses, and the public.
