The White House advocates for healthy diets while eliminating a major nutrition education initiative: NPR

The article discusses the looming elimination of SNAP-Ed, a nutrition education program crucial for promoting healthy eating, especially in lower-income neighborhoods. Advocates and public health experts are puzzled by this decision, especially in light of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement which aims to reduce ultra-processed food consumption.

Elines Olivares, a nutrition educator, shared practical advice with customers at a corner store in Philadelphia, highlighting the program’s hands-on approach to nutrition. Although the White House claims changes to SNAP are aimed at sustainability, experts argue that eliminating SNAP-Ed contradicts the goal of encouraging healthier diets.

Former SNAP-Ed overseer Gina Crist reported that the program has shown positive results, with many participants increasing their fruit and vegetable intake. The removal of SNAP-Ed funding comes at a challenging time when food prices are rising and food insecurity is increasing, making the program’s teachings more valuable than ever.

As SNAP-Ed providers prepare to use any remaining funds by the end of September, the future of nutrition education remains uncertain.
