Reviews for The Confessions of Felix Krull include:

Letterboxd comments:

“If Die Halbstarken propelled Buchholz into the spotlight, Felix Krull firmly established him as one of Germany’s top actors. The film draws from Thomas Mann’s lighter works, and Buchholz shines as a charismatic imposter who cleverly evades military service, launching a con-man career in Paris. His journey is marked by charming encounters and heartbreaks along the way.”

Another reviewer adds:

“Felix is a delightful little rascal. This is my first experience watching a Horst Buchholz star vehicle, and I’m curious about this charming actor’s filmography. His screen presence is captivating, and this movie showcases his range. It’s entertaining and filled with unexpected twists—definitely recommended for fans of comedy!”

IMDb shares:

“This film introduced me to Horst Buchholz, and I found it utterly delightful! I searched for a copy for years and finally found a VHS. It’s now available on DVD in Germany. Buchholz’s portrayal of a charismatic swindler is captivating, and he embodies youthful charm and roguish flair. One of the most memorable scenes is his dramatic act to evade military service—truly inspired!”

Another viewer notes:

“A truly entertaining comedy! While I’m unfamiliar with Mann’s original novel, the film undoubtedly captures its spirit. It’s a joy to hear Buchholz’s witty banter as Felix Krull leads everyone in delightful deception. I relished every moment of this charming, albeit old-fashioned, movie.”

My thoughts:
This film is lighthearted and entertaining, with an innocent comedy style typical of the 1950s. Horst Buchholz’s performance is captivating, thanks to his charming looks and affable charisma. Though it’s not a cinematic masterpiece and has its share of criticism, it provides a delightful hour and forty-five minutes of enjoyment.

Plot Summary (Spoilers Ahead!):

Felix Krull is a smooth operator from a family once known for champagne production but now facing hard times, which shapes his cleverness. With charm and cunning, he masterfully avoids military service and heads to Paris, where a small act of theft leads him to a prestigious hotel job. Ambitiously climbing the social ladder, he captures the hearts of several beautiful women while navigating the complications that arise from jealous partners.

One troubled lover, armed and threatening, cuts a deal with Felix: he’ll take the man’s place on a global trip to give him space with his lady. Felix, at gunpoint, accepts the challenge.

In Portugal, he encounters a professor’s family he met en route from France. His escapades escalate as he becomes involved with the professor’s wife and daughter, ultimately landing himself in jail for his Parisian misadventures. Thankfully, with the professor’s forgiving nature, Felix escapes and reunites with his Parisian love, embarking together on a new adventure free from jealous partners and looming legal troubles.
